Prior to the publication of the June 1945, Manual of Military Occupational Specialties NAVMC 1008-PD, the Marine Corps generally followed the Army's system for classifying jobs for personnel. As stated in the manual, the Marine Corps often used Army publications [1] for determining military SSN's [2]. After the publication of this manual, it would be the sole reference for classifying military personnel in the Marine Corps. The Army Manual, TM-12 426 would still be used for civilian personnel.
Along With this new manual, the addition of job descriptions and SSN's tailored specifically to the Marine Corp were written. Army codes that were approprate were kept (with rewritten descriptions), those that were not were either converted or dropped.
Similar to the army's manual for classification, the MOS's were broken down into Functional fields to show related MOS's. There were twenty one groupings, including; Administrative and clerical, Artillery, Aviation, Band, Communication, Engineer, Food, Infantry, Intelligence, Motor Transport, Ordnance, Paymaster, Photographic, Postal, Public Relations and Publications, Quartermaster, Security and Guard, Special Services, Tank and Amphibian Tractor, Training aids, and Miscellaneous.
Some of the MOS's require a suffix code letter after the SSN to describe the skills of the the MOS holder. Those MOS's (enlisted personnel) are indicated with Designated Machine, Designated Type, Designated Engine, Designated Device, Designated Equipment, and Designated Language in the title. For Pilots (Officer personnel), the letters P,T, or E were used to indicate the level of training completed. [3]
Some interesting additions specific to the Marine Corps manual were Code Talker, 642; Flame Thrower Operator, 781; Bazooka Operator, 794; and Combat Dog Handler, 897.
