MOS 5811, Military Police

Military police perform assigned military law enforcement duties to uphold the criminal justice system, maintain good order and discipline, and support the commander's law enforcement requirements in peacetime and combat operations. Typical duties include foot and motorized patrol, control of pedestrian and vehicular traffic, crime prevention/physical security, desk sergeant, communications dispatcher, squad leader, operations sergeant, platoon sergeant, and provost sergeant billets. MOS 5811 is very demanding in that the military police are confronted with every form of violation and criminal liability, misdemeanor through felony.


Prerequisites.
(1) Must be a U.S. Citizen.
(2) Must possess a GT score of 100 or higher (MCRC may grant a waiver for a GT score as low as 95 for entry level recruits).
(3) Must be eligible for a secret security clearance.
(4) Must have normal color vision (waivers to this prerequisite will not be granted).
(5) Must be 18 years old prior to completion of formal school.
(6) Must have a minimum height of 64 inches with weight in proportion (waivers to the minimum 64 inch height requirement as per reference (av) will not be granted).
(7) Must have a valid state driver's license.
(8) Must have vision correctable to 20/20.
(9) Must possess clarity of speech.
(10) Must have no history of mental, nervous, or emotional disorders (Waivers to this requirement will not be granted).
(11) No convictions by special or general courts-martial or civil courts (except minor traffic violations); no non-judicial punishment (NJP) convictions involving domestic violence, or moral turpitude; or possession; use or transfer of dangerous drugs or marijuana; or identified on a urinalysis screening test as a user of illegal drugs or marijuana. (Waivers
will not be granted for convictions by special or general courts-martial or civil courts for crimes of domestic violence as per reference (br), the Lautenberg Amendment.
(12) Marines requesting lateral move must be screened by the local installation Provost Sergeant (MOS 5811) and recommended by the Provost Marshal. The screening checklist can be downloaded from the Military Police Center of Excellence (COE) web page.

Requirements.
(1) Active Duty Enlisted-Entry Level Marines must complete the Basic Military Police Course at MARCORDET, Ft. Leonard Wood, MO or a HQMC approved Regional Marine Corps Police Academy at Marine Corps Installations East (MCIEAST), or Marine Corps Base Hawaii. Marines completing a HQMC approved Regional Marine Corps Police Academy should be assigned to an Installation
Provost Marshal's office for their first permanent duty station.
(2) Lateral move, prior service retrain-initial skills and Reserve enlisted-SMCR Marines must complete the Basic Military Police Course at MARCORDET, Ft. Leonard Wood, MO, or complete the Military Police Advance Distance Learning course and a minimum of six months managed on-job-training (MOJT) in a military police billet. The Installation Provost Marshal or Military Police Inspector/Instructor must certify that the Marine has completed MOJT and has demonstrated proficiency of all 1000 level 5811 tasks as outlined in the Military Police and Corrections Training and Readiness Manual. In lieu of MOJT, lateral move Marines may be certified for the 5811 PMOS by successfully completing a HQMC approved Regional Marine Corps Police Academy provided they are assigned to an installation Provost Marshal's Office for their permanent duty station after completion of the Academy. Certification that a Marine has completed MOJT or a Regional Marine Corps Police Academy must be submitted to CMC (MMEA or MMRA, as appropriate) via CMC (PP&O/PS) requesting approval to award the 5811 PMOS.
(3) Reserve Enlisted Marines, IADT and IIADT must complete the Basic Military Police Course at MARCORDET, Ft. Leonard Wood, MO.
