MOS 7212, Low Altitude Air Defense (LAAD) Gunner

LAAD gunners provide surface-to-air fires in support of MAGTF and joint air defense assets. Gunners are responsible for employment and maintenance of all equipment and weapon systems inherent to a LAAD Battalion. Gunners will provide ground security in defense of MAGTF air sites when not engaged in air defense operations.


Prerequisites.
(1) Must be a U.S. Citizen.
(2) Must possess a GT score of 90 or higher.
(3) Must possess a valid state driver's license.
(4) Driving record search conducted by the National Driver Register.
(5) Cannot be left eye dominant.
(6) Must have a secret security clearance.
(7) Must hae normal color vision.
(8) Must have 20/20 vision (may be correctable to 20/20 with eyeglasses or contact lenses).
(9) Hearing loss no greater than 15 db between 500-2,000 Hz.
(10) Cannot be less than 5 feet 4-inches in height.

Requirements.
Complete the LAAD Gunner Course.

Duties.

(1) MGySgt to Pvt
(a) Performs the prescribed procedures for the receipt, transportation, handling, and maintenance of LAAD weapons.
(b) Learns and follows standing operating procedures for the deployment and employment of LAAD weapons.
(c) Maintains a working knowledge of threat aircraft characteristics and capabilities.
(d) Accurately locates and reports firing positions using a map.
(e) Complies with established rules of engagement and firing doctrines.
(f) Evaluates target course, speed, range, and relative position.
(g) Utilizes established "safe corridors" and applicable fire control restraints in the operating area.
(h) Learns aircraft traffic patterns at each airfield near gunner positions firing.
(i) Responds to all defense warnings and conditions of readiness with appropriate actions regardless of restraints imposed by each weapon's control/condition.
(j) Conducts daily inspections of LAAD weapons and their components and ancillary equipment.
(k) Complies with safety precautions, especially concerning back blast zone and backstop considerations.
(l) Handles misfires, hang fires, and duds.
(m) Performs emergency destruction of LAAD weapons and ancillary equipment when necessary.
(n) Operates organizational communications equipment using proper radio/ telephone procedures, and using alternate communication means when required.
(o) Reports all aircraft to the air control system utilizing established procedures.
(p) Sends and receives mission related reports.

(2) MGySgt to Cpl
(a) Performs the duties of a LAAD Team Leader.
(b) Verifies location via map/GPS and reports firing positions.
(c) Conducts daily inspection of LAAD weapons, their components, and ancillary equipment.
(d) Responsible for control of all COMSEC material.
(e) Responsible for operational conduct and maintenance of LAAD teams.
(f) Utilizes COMSEC material.

(3) MGySgt to SSgt
(a) Performs the duties of a LAAD Section Leader.
(b) Establish and maintain the ability to provide aircraft early warning to the Marine Air Command and Control System (MACCS) and joint early warning agencies/units.
(c) Responsible for obtaining and loading of COMSEC fills for communications equipment in the section.
(d) Responsible for security of COMSEC materials within their section.
(e) Employ a LAAD section within established doctrine, standard operating procedures, and MAGTF priorities.
(f) Maintain operational message traffic log and prepares tactical map overlays.
(g) Responsible for establishing, operating, and maintaining doctrinal communication links while facilitating the flow of
tactical/logistical information.
(h) Controls fire discipline within the LAAD section and coordinate missile resupply.
(i) Responsible for installing and maintaining appropriate IFF codes in IFF equipment throughout the section.
(j) Responsible for assigning LAAD teams a firing position emplacement that will support mission requirements.
(k) Responsible for preventive maintenance and maintenance of all assigned section equipment and weapons.
(l) Responsible for all training/administration requirements of the section.

(4) MGySgt to GySgt: Performs duties as operations chief of a LAAD
battery.
(a) Performs the duties of a LAAD Platoon Sergeant.
(b) Supervise the emplacement and employment of LAAD sections.
(c) Prepares map overlays and plotting boards depicting the disposition and status of LAAD sections and teams.
(d) Supervise unit and individual training.
(e) Coordinate tactical resupply operations in support of LAD sections.

(5) MGySgt
(a) Performs the duties as operations chief of a LAAD battery.
(b) Performs the duties as Training Chief of a LAAD battery.
