Makes and repairs metal parts in a machine shop. Reads blueprints, selects stock, lays out design, and follows work through to completion.
Sets up work and operates such metal-working machines as engine and turret lathes, milling machines, planers, shapers, drill presses, and boring mills. Works within close tolerances. May heat-treat metals. Must be able to work from blueprints and written specifications. Must know the working properties of such metals as aluminum, brass, cast and wrought iron, and various steels.
