114 - MACHINIST

Makes and repairs metal parts in a machine shop. Reads blueprints, selects stock, lays out design, and follows work through to completion.

Sets up work and operates such metal-working machines as engine and turret lathes, milling machines, planers, shapers, drill presses, and boring mills. Works within close tolerances. May heat-treat metals.  Must be able to work from blueprints and written specifications. Must know the working properties of such metals as aluminum, brass, cast and wrought iron, and various steels.  Note—See also SSN's 241, 302, and 823.
