09L - Interpreter/ Translator

The Interpreter/Translator is primarily responsible for conducting interpretation (oral) and preparing translations (written) between English and a foreign language, as well assisting in unit foreign language and cultural awareness familiarization training. 09L Soldiers specialize in a number of Middle-Eastern languages.
 

 

 

 

 

09L1O - Skill Level One

At this skill level, as a 09L Soldier you will perform low- and mid-level interpretation. You will conduct sight translations of foreign language material (signs, documents, instructions, etc...) into English. A key element of your duties as a 09L is to brief the unit/organization that you are supporting on interpreter/translator utilization and capabilities. You will also support the unit/organization by assisting in language and cultural awareness familiarization. The 09L Soldiers also verify low-level interpretation of contract linguists and local hires. As a SPC in MOS 09L you will be a member of a Tactical-Interpreter Translator Team.

As a 09L Soldier assigned to an I/T Company located at a CTC between deployments, you will be employed as a Cultural Awareness Trainer in order to help enhance Contemporary Operating Environment (COE) training. As a trainer, you will perform a variety of roles including serving as an Interpreter/Translator for units rotating through CTC training, linguist role player, and cultural awareness instructor/advisor. While stationed at the CTC,

As a 09L Soldier, you will be deployed in teams of four as a member of either an Operational (Division and Corps HQ) or Tactical (BCT) -I/T Team. These teams provide native/heritage language interpretation, translation, and regional/cultural awareness support to maneuver forces. You will assist units and individuals entering the Theater of Operations by providing cultural awareness/familiarity and language training.
this is a good time to continue MOS education in the form of language training (English and foreign language) and NCOES courses.


 

09L2O - Skill Level Two

At this skill level, as a 09L Soldier you will perform the duties that were outlined in preceding skill level and provide guidance to subordinate Soldiers. As an NCO you will continue to gain more responsibility both with technical MOS skills and leadership skills as well. You will be called upon to supervise the maintenance and development of English and foreign language skills, as well as MOS skills of your subordinates. You will prepare written translations from a foreign language to English and will now conduct language familiarization and cultural awareness training for the unit/organization you are supporting. You will verify mid-level interpretation. As a 09L in the rank of SGT you will be a member of either an Operational or Tactical-Interpreter Translator Team.

 

09L3O - Skill Level Three

At this skill level, Soldiers performs duties as shown in preceding skill levels and provide guidance to subordinate Soldiers. As a 09L SSG you will require a minimum foreign language reading proficiency rating of R2. You will be expected to verify documents and perform translations. You will also begin to perform interpreter and translator duties in the role of a high level escort. As a SSG in MOS 09L you will serve as a Team Leader of a Tactical-Interpreter Translator Team.

As a 09L Soldier assigned to an I/T Company located at a CTC between deployments, you will be employed as a Cultural Awareness Trainer in order to help enhance Contemporary Operating Environment (COE) training. As a trainer, you will perform a variety of roles including serving as an Interpreter/Translator for units rotating through CTC training, linguist role player, and cultural awareness instructor/advisor. 09L4O - Skill Level Four

At this skill level, Soldiers performs duties as shown in preceding skill levels. In the rank of SFC you will supervise the maintenance and development of English and foreign language skills of subordinates, as well as MOS skills. You will require a SECRET eligibility for promotion to this rank. As a SFC you will be able to serve as a Platoon Sergeant, or Company Operations SGT, as well as being a member of the Operational-Interpreter Translator Team. If you are the senior member of your Operational Team you will be assigned as the Team Leader.
