A Man Portable Air Defense System Crewmember is part of the Army's field artillery team. Artillery are weapons that fire large ammunition or missiles to support infantry and tank units in combat. The man portable air defense system crewmember supervises or serves as member of portable Air Defense system missile unit and air defense activity engaged in operations and intelligence functions.

Man Portable Air Defense System Crewmember: Establishes and maintains radio and wire communications. Assist in maintaining situation map. Performs target engagement evaluation. Applies infrared techniques to detect and engage targets. Operate identification, friend or foe (IFF), programmer/charger. Resupplies ammunition and prepares MANPADS for firing. Fire MANPADS. Perform emergency procedures for weapons systems.
AMMUNITION HANDLER: Responsible for the handling, transportation, accountability, and distribution of ammunition. Accountable for a High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) Conducts Preventive Maintenance Checks Services (PMCS) performing before, during and after maintenance on the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) system while annotating deficiencies on DA Form 2404/5988E (Equipment Inspection and Maintenance Worksheet), and maintains vehicle equipment logs.
MANPADS CREWMEMBER: The team consists of a team chief and a gunner. Both team members are trained as gunners and in communications, target detection, and aircraft recognition. During periods of intense air activity, both may act as gunners to increase the rate of fire. A basic load of six Stinger weapons (four weapon-rounds and two missile-rounds) are carried by each team, initially, during combat operations. Resupply will normally be with RMP and Basic stinger missiles. Stinger teams supporting maneuver units provide such units with an additional means of air defense (shoot, move and communicate) capabilities.
OPERATIONS ASSISTANT: Perform data connectivity between AD communications equipment, Tri-Services Tactical Communications (TRITAC) network, Mobile Subscriber Equipment (MSE), and Link-11 with Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps and Allied Nations. Perform on-line/off-line Common Hardware-Software diagnostics and fault isolation programs. Emplace, initialize, operates and march orders LAN, WAN, JTAGS, GMD, ADAM Cell and remote video displays.
RADIO TELEPHONE OPERATOR: Radio and telephone operator-maintainers supervise, install, operate, and perform preventive maintenance checks and services and unit level maintenance on assigned amplitude modulation radios, telephones, and Enhanced Position Locating and Reporting System net control stations, radio teletypewriter assemblages, and Army Special Operations communications systems, to include communication security devices and associated equipment
SFV CREW MEMBER: The SFV crewmember serves as member of portable Air Defense system missile unit and air defense activity engaged in operations and intelligence functions on track a vehicle.
VEHICLE DRIVER: Accountable for a High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) Conducts Preventive Maintenance Checks Services (PMCS) performing before, during and after maintenance on the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) system while annotating deficiencies on DA Form 2404/5988E (Equipment Inspection and Maintenance Worksheet), and maintains vehicle equipment logs. Assists maintenance mechanics with parts and labor on their assigned vehicle; Performs duties of transporting the Platoon Sergeant/Platoon Leader.

AMMUNITION TEAM LEADER: Supervises the operations, loading, and maintenance, accountability, and distribution of the Ammunition Supply system and vehicles. Responsible for the health, welfare, and morale of 2-4 Soldiers.
ASSISTANT LIAISON SGT: Serves as the Assistant Liaison Sergeant in the Battalion/Brigade Headquarters of the Air Missile Defense Command; Assists in the planning, execution, and evaluation of the Battalion/Brigade training plan.
MANPADS TEAM LEADER: The MANPADS Team Leader has several responsibilities. He/She are responsible for tactical employment, tasks, and logistics. He is also the special staff officer for air defense for the sup-ported unit commander.

Collects and consolidates intelligence information. Process special and periodic reports. Prepares and maintains team’s situation map. Transmit intelligence and grid locations of incoming targets. Man Portable Air Defense System Crewmember: Performs duties in preceding skill levels, supervises and provides technical guidance to subordinate soldiers. Writes and handles United States Message Test Format (USMTF) messages. Prepares for and supervises section movement. Supervise radio and wire communications. Plans for and supervises ammunition resupply. Deploy section to provide air defense coverage. Assist in establishing operations and intelligence data. Supervise dissemination of air and ground early warning information on the manual SHORAD control system (MSCS). Assist update of OPORD, situation maps and overlays. Supervise electronic counter measures and electronic counter countermeasures operations.
SECTION CHIEF: The MANPADS teams are commanded and controlled by the section chief. The section chief controls his teams during field operations through use of a detailed TSOP. This method of control is used because the teams are usually located at long distances from the section chief’s command post. Therefore, direct and personal supervision of each team normally is not possible. Accountable for the health, welfare, morale, training, and supervision of 6 – 10 soldiers;
SECTION LEADER: The Section Leader has several responsibilities. Responsible for tactical employment, track commander tasks, and logistics of 8-12 Soldiers. He is also the special staff officer for air defense for the supported unit commander. Responsible for the operations, preventative maintenance of the Air and Missile Defense Planning and Control System (AMDPCS) as well as, vital system software/hardware valued at over one millions.
SQUAD LEADER: The Squad Leader is the SFV Commander and has overall responsibility for the squad. He identifies and designates targets, routes of movement, and vehicle positions. He determines weapons to be fired, fired command, and decides when to dismount the Stinger team. He also maintains communications and carries out the platoon leader’s or platoon sergeant’s directives. The squad leader has primary responsibility for the maintenance of the SFV and the training of his squad.

DETACHMENT SGT: Serves as the Detachment Sergeant in an Air and Missile Defense Cells typically assigned under the Space and Missile Defense Command; Operational assignments include the Joint Tactical Air Ground System (JTAGS), Ground Missile Defense (GMD), and Air Defense Airspace Management (ADAM) Cell.
