14S - Air and Missile Defense Crewmember

An Air and Missile Defense Crewmember is a member of the Army's air defense artillery team using the AVENGER system. The AVENGER system is a lightweight, highly mobile and transportable surface-to-air missile/gun weapon system. It provides mobile, short-range air defense protection against air and land attacks. The Air and Missile Defense Crewmember serves as a member of the highly mobile Avenger operations team.

Air and Missile Defense Crewmember: Prepares, operates and fires the AVENGER and Man Portable Air Defense System (MANPADS) weapons systems. Establishes and maintains radio and wire communications. Assists in maintaining situation map. Performs target engagement evaluation. Applies infrared (IR) techniques to detect and engage targets. Operates identification, friend or foe (IFF) programmer/ charger. Resupplies ammunition and prepares systems for firing. Performs emergency procedures for weapon systems. Maintains sight alignment on systems. Operates and maintains system carriers.

Vehicle Driver: Serves as a Vehicle Driver in the Air and Missile Defense (AMD) battery; Performs duties of transporting the Platoon Sergeant/Platoon Leader; Responsible for the Preventative Maintenance Checks of Services (PMCS) of 1 HMMWV.

Missile Handler: Serves as a Missile Handler in the Air and Missile Defense (AMD) battery; Prepares, operates and fires the AVENGER and Man Portable Air Defense System (MANPADS) weapons systems; Establishes and maintains radio and wire communications; Assists in maintaining situation map; Performs target engagement evaluation; Applies infrared (IR) techniques to detect and engage targets; Operates identification, friend or foe (IFF) programmer/ charger; Resupplies ammunition and prepares systems for firing; Performs emergency procedures for weapon systems; Maintains sight alignment on systems. Operates and maintains system carriers.

AMD Crewmember: Serves as an Air and Missile Defense (AMD) crewmember in a forward deployed AMD Battery; Performs as a crewmember on a battle rostered crew; Responsible for maintaining technical and tactical knowledge to accomplish the duties of his/her position in regards to Air Defense Operations; Performs near-real time status reporting, report generation, and system deployment; Evaluates target data and identifies and engages targets as a member of an air defense activity engaged in operations functions; Responsible for the operation, preventative maintenance and repair of related equipment; Prepares, operates and fires the Surface Launched Advanced Medium Range Air to Air Missile (SLAMRAAM) and Avenger weapon systems. Performs Man Portable Air Defense System (MANPADS) degraded operations as required while assigned to the Avenger System. Establishes and maintains radio and wire communications. Assist in maintaining situation map. Performs target engagement evaluation. Applies infrared (IR) techniques to detect and engage targets. Operate identification, friend or foe (IFF) programmer/charger. Resupplies ammunition and prepares systems for firing. Perform emergency procedures for weapon systems. Team Leader: Serves as a Team Leader in the Air and Missile Defense (AMD) battery; Responsible for the health, welfare, and morale of 4 - 10 soldiers and NCOs; Provides tactical and technical guidance on employment and operator – level Preventative Maintenance Checks and Services (PMCS) of equipment in the unit;

Assistant Operations Sergeant: Serves as an Assistant Operations Sergeant in the Battalion Headquarters of the Air and Missile Defense (AMD) battalion; Assists the Operations Sergeant in the coordination, implementation, and evaluation of battalion training plans and operations.

BATTERY Master Gunner: Serves as the Master Gunner in the battery headquarters of the Air and Missile Defense (AMD) battery; Evaluates all positions in the firing battery; Consolidates, writes, and implements the training plan for all related equipment; Writes the battery defense design for the commander’s approval; Coordinates training with all the platoons to facilitate unit training; Ensures the defense design is properly entered and tested in AMDWS, and is IAW BN directives; Coordinates with the Battalion Master Evaluator for guidance and evaluations; Ensures proper cross training across positions to prevent degradation upon loss of crew personnel; Ensures all training is IAW ARTEP and TSOP standards; Advises the commander on the training status of the unit.

Squad Leader: Evaluates all personnel in the squad; Writes and implements the training plan for all squad related equipment; Ensures proper cross training across positions to prevent degradation upon loss of personnel with the aid of the Platoon Sergeant and Master Gunner; Reviews defense design to prevent major deficiencies from occurring and briefs subordinates; Coordinates with battery Master Gunners to provide cross training; Advises the Platoon Sergeant on the training status of the squad; Responsible for the health, welfare, and morale of 4 – 10 Soldiers, as well as, equipment valued in excess of $25,000,000.

Platoon Sergeant: Platoon Sergeant for a forward deployed Air and Missile Defense (AMD) Battery in support of Higher Echelon; Responsible for the health, welfare, morale, training, and supervision of 17 - 21 soldiers and NCOs; provides technical and tactical guidance to accomplish the daily duties of his/her platoon, to include supply, food service, and NBC Operations, as well as the overall training, operations, and administrative actions for the platoon; responsible for vehicles and support equipment, valued in excess of $25,000,000; Evaluates all positions in the firing battery; Writes and implements the training plan for the platoon; Evaluates the battery defense design and briefs commander of deficiencies, and subordinates for execution; Coordinates training with all platoons to facilitate unit training; Ensures proper cross training across positions to prevent degradation upon loss of crew personnel; Ensures all training is IAW ARTEP and TSOP standards; Advises the commander on the training status of the platoon. Supervises AVENGER/MANPADS operations. Performs or supervises ADA operations and intelligence duties. Assists platoon leader in planning, management and training activities of subordinate sections. Performs and supervises ADA battle management center operations. Conducts platoon reconnaissance, selection and occupation of position (RSOP). Coordinates platoon and section logistical activities.

BN Master Gunner: Serves as the Battalion Master Gunner in the battalion headquarters of the Air and Missile Defense (AMD) battalion; Evaluates all positions in the firing battery(s); Consolidates, writes, and implements the training plan for all related equipment; Evaluates the battalion and battery(s) defense design(s) for the commander’s approval; Coordinates training with all the batteries/platoons to facilitate unit training; Ensures the defense design is properly entered and tested in AMDWS, and is IAW BN directives; Coordinates with the Battalion Master Evaluator for guidance and evaluations; Ensures proper cross training across positions to prevent degradation upon loss of crew personnel; Ensures all training is IAW ARTEP and TSOP standards; Advises the commander on the training status of the unit.

Course Scope:
Training on MANPADS/Avenger weapon system major components, characteristics, capabilities, controls and indicators; weapon system safety; visual aircraft recognition, forms and records, Preventive Maintenance Checks and Services (PMCS) on the M998/M1097 HMMWV; MANPADS; operate and maintain SINCGARS, Simplified Handheld Terminal Unit (SHTU), handheld Terminal Unit (HTU), Precision Lightweight Global Positioning System Receiver (PLGR), and associated support equipment; familiarization on programming the IFF Interrogator and charging the IFF Interrogator batteries, load/unload the M3P machine gun and missile pods; weapon handling; hangfire/misfire and dud procedures; march order and emplacement; target engagement involving fixed and rotary-wing by machine gun, missile or MANPAD mode;, and live firing of the Avenger
weapon system or MANPADS.
