Specialty Summary. Deploys, installs, repairs and sustains fixed, mobile, and transportable voice switching systems (VSS), Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), Voice Protection System (VPS), Telecommunications Management Systems (TMS), key and intercom systems, copper core and fiber-optic wiring, terminal blocks, instruments, data transmission media, circuits (switched and non-switched), intra-building wiring, T-carrier, fiber-optic end equipment, modems, multiplexers, and associated hardware supporting command, control, communications, computer, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance systems.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide mission critical voice services to include system modernization upgrades, replacements, business features, maintenance systems and access to military, federal and commercial networks. Maintains software currency with commercial telephony infrastructure for all voice switches.
Performs mobilization and operation of deployable communications systems. Establishes maintenance management procedures and agile logistics support channels to sustain continuous network operations. Coordinates and assists end users in isolating and eliminating communications connectivity problems. Removes, repairs and replaces assemblies, subassemblies and electronic components to optimally sustain communications networks. Prepare systems for redeployment and equipment regeneration.
Tests, troubleshoots, and repairs voice systems equipment and circuits utilizing tools and test equipment. Monitors the performance of systems and circuits. Analyzes test results and implements corrective actions. Checks equipment for serviceability and performs preventive maintenance. Performs corrosion control.
Maintains and administers telecommunications records, forms, and databases. Updates and verifies entries on system, facility, maintenance, and inspection records. Initiates, tracks, and maintains shipping, receiving, supply, and equipment documents.
Conduct periodic inspections of systems installations and repair activities. Interprets inspection reports and implements corrective actions. Documents inspection and maintenance actions.
Reviews and maintains operational measurement reports. Analyzes traffic load and telephone number assignments. Evaluates engineering and operational plans for voice systems.
Applies communications security programs to include physical, cryptographic, transmission, and emission security. Develops and ensures compliance with safety standards and instructions.
Plans, schedules, and implements installation and maintenance functions associated with voice systems. Interprets sketches and layout drawings for placement of intra-building distribution systems. Reviews, recommends, and implements changes to communications-computer systems installations records (CSIR), technical data, engineering drawings, and equipment wiring diagrams. Ensures equipment and components meet installation practice technical order and commercial manual specifications. Coordinates and makes recommendations to ensure systems and services meet customer requirements.
Specialty Qualifications:
Knowledge. Knowledge of electronic principles, telephony fundamentals, copper and fiber-optic transmission principles, voice system installation practices, CSIRs, project and circuit diagram interpretation, test equipment, special tools, and maintenance management practices is mandatory.
Education. Completion of high school with courses in analytical mathematics is desirable.
Training. The following training is mandatory for award of the AFSC indicated:
2E633. Completion of the Voice Network Systems Apprentice course.
2E673. Completion of a communications-electronics career advancement course.
Experience. The following experience is mandatory for award of the AFSC indicated:
2E653. Qualification in and possession of AFSC 2E633. Also, experience is mandatory in functions such as installing, troubleshooting and repairing voice network systems and associated equipment.
2E673. Qualification in and possession of AFSC 2E653. Also, experience in supervising installation, maintenance, and repair of voice network systems.
Other: The following are mandatory as indicated: For entry into this specialty: Normal color vision as defined in AFI 48-123, Medical Examinations and Standards. Qualification to operate a government vehicle according to AFI 24-301, Vehicle Operations. For entry, award and retention of these AFSCs, physical ability to perform climbing duties, and freedom from fear of heights and claustrophobia. For award and retention: Specialty requires routine access to Secret material or similar environment. For award and retention of AFSCs 2E6X3, completion of a current National Agency Check, Local Agency Checks and Credit (NACLC) according to AFI 31‑501, Personnel Security Program Management. NOTE: Award of the 3-skill level without a complete NACLC is authorized provided an interim Secret security clearance has been granted according to AFI 31-501. For award and retention of 2E653/73, must maintain an Air Force Network License according to AFI 33-115, Vol 2, Licensing Network Users and Certifying Network Professionals.
