Specialty Summary.  Operates, performs, and manages electronic signals intelligence exploitation activities and functions.  Operates electronic monitoring, analysis, and related equipment.  Analyzes, processes, and derives intelligence from electromagnetic emissions.  Related DoD Occupational Subgroup:  155600.

 

 

Duties and Responsibilities:  Conducts signals intelligence (SIGINT) activities and operations.  Performs operator and analyst duties to exploit electronic intelligence (ELINT), foreign instrumentation signals intelligence (FISINT), and PROFORMA activities.  Performs signals exploitation to support electronic warfare (EW) operations.

Operates electronic search and related equipment.  Searches and exploits signal activity throughout the radio frequency spectrum.  Operates electromagnetic receiving and recording systems to monitor, acquire, collect, and exploit electromagnetic emissions.  

Performs signals analysis functions.  Analyzes electromagnetic emissions characteristics.  Determines line of bearing or origin point, external characteristics, and parameters of electromagnetic emissions.  Operates signals analysis and data processing equipment.  Extracts data from electromagnetic signals and reports results.  Evaluates electromagnetic emissions to determine, document and report signal characteristics.  Performs analysis and exploitation activities aboard aircraft.

Develops and maintains automated databases and operational logs.  Documents equipment status, signals characteristics, and analytical findings.

Assembles operational and technical information on ELINT, FISINT, PROFORMA, and EW activities.  Performs quality control and fusion analysis.  Prepares and disseminates reports to consumers.

Plans, organizes, and directs electromagnetic signals exploitation activities.  Satisfies tasking by managing resources for SIGINT and EW activities.  Identifies responsibilities for overseeing operations, intelligence analysis, and data reduction functions.

Specialty Qualifications:
Knowledge.  Knowledge is mandatory of:  intelligence operations; data reduction and processing; reporting; electronic principles applicable to signals collection and analysis; and missions and functions of ELINT, FISINT, PROFORMA, and EW operations.

Education.  Completion of high school with courses in basic electronics, physics, algebra, and trigonometry is desirable for entry into this specialty.

Training.  Completion of a basic electronic signals intelligence exploitation course is mandatory for award of AFSC 1N531.

Experience.  The following experience is mandatory for award of the AFSC indicated:
1N551.  Qualification in and possession of AFSC 1N531.
1N571.  Qualification in and possession of AFSC 1N551.

Other.  The following are mandatory as indicated:  For entry into this specialty:  No record or history of temporomandibular joint pain or disorder.  Specialty requires routine access to Top Secret material or similar environment.  For award and retention of AFSCs 1N5X1, completion of a current Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI) according to AFI 31-501, Personnel Security Program Management.  NOTE:  Award of the 3-skill level without a completed SSBI is authorized provided an interim Top Secret clearance has been granted according to AFI 31-501.
